The Whats were an old joke gift that was given away years ago that some people enjoyed playing with.   They're high land-impact (10LI) and generally low resolution in general.  They weren't meant to be anything serious.  But now they are?

Do they have mutations?  Yes.  Do they have a lot?  No.  They were never intended to be something serious.  Will they be updated and get more mutations in the future?  We'll see.  They aren't the easiest thing in the world to work with.

As a v19 pet, the Whats require a Data Center.  The What Data Center must be rezzed in order for the Whats to download their UUIDs and trait values.  Always rez the Data Center before birthing any pets that require a Data Center or they will fail to find their textures and traits.

Consult the Drops rarity tables for their glow, size, and classes.  All Drops glow, size, and class unlocks are available.

All Whats give away Candy!  Their Tier affects how often (max once per hour at Tier 15+), and how potent of Candy they give away.  As they increase in Tier, the power of their Candy increases significantly.    The What's eye-type determines what kind of Candy is handed out.  Light eyes give Morale-based Candy, while Dark eyes give Loyalty-based Candy.  Your gardens have already had access to most, if not all of these types of candy in the past from one source or another, however, as the What gains Tier the boost that the candy gives may end up being a bit more than the candy that you have been feeding them.
